5 Tips to Taking Better Photos of Your Kids | San Clemente Family Photographer

As a San Clemente Family Photographer, I understand the importance of being able to capture children just as they are. Have you ever seen photos from a photographer and thought "How in the world did she get that shot of that adorable little kid?" Well, I wanted to share some of my tips with you to hopefully help you create and capture some beautiful moments of your own little one with the camera of your choice.

You don't have a fancy DSLR camera? No problem! You most likely have a pretty decent camera on you at all times... your cell phone!

1. Light
Photography is all about the light. This is a bit more technical than you really need (unless you plan on really learning about photography), but it's still important. It's such a great idea to try and not have your child in mid-day sun. This light is too harsh and can create some terrible contrasts between shadows and highlights if you're not sure how to use them to benefit you. If done just right, you can get a beautiful mix between the two that can create such wonderful dimensions in your images. Try to avoid underneath trees where pockets of light shine though the leaves and land right on their faces. Instead, try the shadow of a building.

2. Editing
It's really important to not overdo it. You know all those fancy Instagram filters you have... you don't need to use EVERY. SINGLE. ONE on every image. Look for filters that compliment the photo. Try to stay away from the ones that make your little nugget look green (or some other weird color)

3. Posing
For me, I find it hard to try and force kids at a certain age to pose. Heck, sometimes it's hard to get DAD to pose! Even when children are old enough to take direction, they tend to get bored, distracted or irritated when continuously asked to pose. Instead, just let them be themselves! Let them have fun! Let them be KIDS! If you know you're gong to be taking photos of your little ones, take them some place they love! Doing this has it's pros and it's cons. They will have fun, they will enjoy themselves... YOU will be chasing after them all over the place. It's a great way to get your workout in at the same time!

4. Be quick!
Kids move SO FAST! It's important to always be ready for the shot! You never know when they are going to make that cute little face, give you that smile, or look your way. You need to be prepared. Be aware, be ready, and try not to miss those moments.

5. Get in the frame!
In the end, your children really just want to spend time with YOU! They want to laugh with you, love on you, play with you. For me, the most important thing is making sure YOU get in the photo with them! Time flies by so quickly, and before you know it, they aren't going to want to play with you any more, or snuggle with you. They'll prefer their friends to their parents. Take selfies with your kids, ask someone to take a photo of you with them, or... HIRE ME! This is a specialty. Capturing these moments that only last so long is important! And you only have so long before those moments are gone and they've grown up and out of those chubby cheeks.

If you're in need of some updated family photos, I would love to capture those moments for you! Let me capture your unique connection. CONTACT ME today about a San Clemente Family Photography Session.
